Tips For Being A Good Role Model For Your Staff


Running a smooth business isn’t only about you. If your company has grown, then it’s likely you have staff under you who report to you and others on the team. It’s your job to set the tone and create an environment that you feel is supportive and allows employees to showcase their best talents.

Sometimes you’re so caught up in your own world that you forget people are watching you. Understand that if you’re a small business owner, there’s always going to be somebody paying attention to your every move. Make sure you’re setting a good example and properly representing the company. See tips for being a good role model for your staff.

Work on your Professional Development

Part of your job as the boss is to be knowledgeable and well-rounded. This means taking courses, attending seminars and learning outside of your daily responsibilities. Show up on Time

It’s a good idea to always arrive early. Make it a habit of being in your seat well before the start time of any meetings or company gatherings. You don’t want to get the reputation of always being late. This sets the tone that because you do it, it’s okay for others to also show up whenever they choose. Be a good role model by arriving at important functions well ahead of schedule. This will motivate your staff to want to be there on time too.

Keep your Word

Part of earning other people’s trust is keeping your word. Do what you say you’re going to do and be honest in all encounters. You want to build a reputation for being reliable, consistent and trustworthy. Employees will stop taking you seriously or believing what you say if you’re always letting them down. Think before you speak and check your calendar prior to making commitments. This way you won’t have to waste time covering your tracks and lying to save face. You can be authentic in your interactions and not feel like you’re constantly battling internal and external conflicts.

Be A Leader & have Confidence in yourself

Be a leader by showing your staff that you are one. Have confidence in yourself and your abilities, and let it be known that you’re comfortable with being in charge. Make decisions, speak up and demonstrate to others that you know how to run a business. Keep your promises, focus on your personal growth and treat others with respect, no matter their position. You don’t have to be arrogant to be a leader, so be aware of your attitude and the image you’re projecting at work. Carry yourself with poise and don’t be afraid to put your foot down when the situation calls for it.

Avoid Picking Favourites

Being in charge isn’t about making others feel bad. You’ll be setting yourself up for a challenging office environment if you do. Run your company as a business and don’t get into politics and picking favourites. Be aware of how you speak to each person, treat everyone the same and use language that’s respectful. Let it be known that you care about performance and not who’s most popular in the office. Be willing to give everyone a chance to show you what they’re made of and how they can contribute to growing the business.

Admit your Mistakes

Being good at your job doesn’t mean you never make mistakes. In fact, you should be the first one to admit when you mess up. Let others see that it’s okay not to be perfect and be willing to share your examples loud and proud. Being a good boss is all about laying the right foundation for others to follow. Speak up when you’re at fault or a project doesn’t go as planned. Come to the table with solutions and don’t sit and complain and whine about the situation. Show you’re a problem solver and don’t give up easily.

Take Care of yourself Outside of Work

Be a good role model by taking care of yourself outside of work too. Exercise, eat right and get plenty of sleep so you’re prepared to work hard each day. Encourage other people to live a healthy lifestyle and create a culture that supports work-life balance. Show that you’re in control and take care of yourself because it allows you to perform better at your job. Others will take notice and want to follow in your footsteps. Organise a day of activities at the office for fun, block off space where staff can go to take breaks and offer healthy rewards when your employees do a good job.

Demonstrate A Positive Attitude

Work is demanding and often takes a toll on your mind and body if you’re not careful. Nurture your mind and manage your thoughts daily to avoid your brain from running on overdrive. Having a positive attitude is one way to combat negative feelings and emotions. Be known as the person who’s always handing out encouragement and looking on the bright side. Be vocal about having your staff be the same way and not instantly get frustrated or give up when the job becomes challenging.


Being the boss comes with the pressure of having others watching you. This is your chance to lead your staff to greatness and show others that you accept the challenge of being a leader. This is a lot to take in and consider outside of your regular job duties, so let it all sink in and give yourself a chance to adapt.
